|Body=The CCSA Senate - What It Can Do for You
The CCSA Senate is a 36-member body which deals with student interests around campus. There are six senators from each class and six executive board members in the Senate. Every spring, new sophomore, junior, and senior senators, along with new executive board members, are elected. Freshman senators are elected in the fall. The function of the Senate is to represent the student body in matters dealing with the administration, and the entire college community in general.

The Senate meets every Monday night in the ERC Meeting Room at 7:00pm. Senate meetings begin at 7:30pm after a half hour of informal discussion. Meetings are always open to all interested students and we encourage you to come and learn about things that we're doing.

During meetings, Senators report on what they have been doing during the week in their committees. Students are welcome to join any committee in which they're interested.

The Academic Affairs Committee deals with problems that students have with professors, or with anything related to academics. Also, this committee will relay messages to professors if you feel that by doing so yourself, you may jeopardize your grade. For instance, if you have a professor whose handwriting is so small that it's difficult to read boardwork, but you feel silly telling him, the Academic Affairs Committee will tell him for you. If you have anything that you feel this committee can help you with or if you'd like to join it, contact chairperson Sue Hope.

The Activities Committee, chaired by John Fricker, is responsible for helping to create new clubs and helping to maintain old ones. This committee is also responsible for helping clubs revise their constitutions.

Claire Grube chairs the Elections Committee and the members of the committee are senior class senators. They run the Senate and Class Officer elections.

The Finance Committee, which is chaired by Paul Fiorentino, is responsible for allocating your activities fee to CCSA Clubs.

The Intercollege Committee is in contact with the Student Governments at Potsdam State, St. Lawrence, and Canton ATC. The four colleges keep one another informed of activities that they have so that all students can take advantage of the other college campuses in the area. The Intercollege Committee is chaired by Chip Digirolamo.

Shirley Sellstone chairs the ISC, or Independent Student Coalition. Clarkson is a member of the ISC, which is a statewide coalition of independent colleges that lobbies for students in Albany. Representatives from Clarkson attend meetings in Albany to discuss issues that are coming up in the legislature and how we want to be represented.

The Long-Term Planning Committee, chaired by Andy Coradeschi, looks into long-term plans for the Senate so that decisions the Senate makes will not have bad long term affects for future students.

The Student Life Committee deals with student problems with health, food, and housing, as well as campus life in general. This committee is chaired by Jackie Hammersla.

Feel free to contact any of these committee chairpeople if you'd like to join a committee or if you have something you'd like the committee to help you with. The Senate Office is open every weekday - drop in or call the office (265-3660) any time.

Each month, class senators will advertise a meeting time so that you can meet them and discuss things of interest to you. If, in the meantime, you want to discuss something, stop in or call the Senate Office or contact a senator directly.

The Senate provides students with an extremely efficient communication network, allowing students to express any ideas, opinions and problems in a responsible manner. It is one of the quickest, most convenient routes between the students and those whom they would like to affect.

Accessibility to the Senate is underestimated and should be take advantage of by the students. If you would like to have your ideas put into action, the Senate can very likely provide you with the means and resources to voice your concerns and elicit responses from those in a position to respond to your ideas.

Join the committee in which you would like to have an effect. These committees welcome fresh input and ideas. It is a way for students to become involved and to expand their interest. Working within a democratic, structural system is an integral part of life and can be very rewarding and productive if you put forth a sincere effort. There are other means of expressing your views and ideas around campus, via the Integrator, conversations, etc. But if you want official recognition and people working with you, the Senate provides the necessary means an dresources to put your ideas into action.
