Labor Day Weekend Break Project: From Window Seals to an 80-Inch TV Computer

  • by

So, what did you do for your Labor Day weekend break project? Me, I had to take a break from job hunting. There are only so many times you can check the boxes for white, male, non-veteran, no disability before it starts eating at you. Even the search algorithm got tired of me, it started suggesting I’d make a great nurse. (Tip: never let your IT person take your temperature. LOL.)

Instead of endlessly refreshing job boards, I decided my Labor Day weekend break project would be productive. Up here in the North Country it’s already starting to get cold, so I replaced all the middle seals in our windows. That quick fix made the whole house feel warmer.

Then I looked at our 80-inch theater room TV and thought: “Wouldn’t it be neat if this was a computer too?” Imagine sitting in a recliner, watching Hackers for the thousandth time, and flipping over to check emails or fill out job applications.

I dug through my spare parts pile and found a thin client with 8GB of RAM and a 100GB SSD. A sad little computer, sure, but good enough for the mission. I installed Windows 10, killed the bloatware, added OpenOffice, and hooked it up to the TV. Now it runs like a basic office computer, and for anything heavier I just remote into my main machine. The best part? I can flip from Netflix to email with the input button on the remote.

At this rate, though, I’d better land a job soon, or I’ll end up running Cat6 cable to our chihuahuas. They’re already giving me funny looks.
