A Very Strange Day in My Job Search

  • by

The day started out just like any other. I got up early, had breakfast, and enjoyed my coffee. I knew I had to send out my 50 minimum job applications early because one of my sons had an eye doctor appointment.

That is when things turned strange. I only ever use my cell phone for job applications. So when it started ringing nonstop today, you can imagine my surprise. Every single call showed Spam Risk or Telemarketer. At the same time, my LinkedIn inbox started to fill with new messages.

Just in case one was real, I picked up. It turns out that an entry level help desk position was posted in the small town where I live. It pays just a little above minimum wage. I do not mean to sound ungrateful, but I have over 20 years of IT experience, an electronic engineering degree, and I have worked in high profile jobs. At this stage in my career, I cannot start over at a job that would not even cover my mortgage, not to mention feeding my family.

What puzzles me is this. Every caller had a heavy foreign accent and some could barely speak English. It felt like they scraped a database, probably LinkedIn, saw IT on my profile and decided to act as recruiters without checking if I was even a good fit. Today I got about 10 calls and 3 or 4 messages.

In the middle of all that noise, a real recruiter finally called about a job I had applied for. I am thankful I answered, but this is exactly why I am concerned. The same thing happened two years ago during my last job search. It makes me worry that all this noise will muddy the waters and cause me to miss the right job.

The question I have.

Has anyone else had this happen? Why would recruiters push entry level jobs to someone with two decades of experience? One look at my résumé or LinkedIn profile should make it clear that I am not seeking entry level work.

For now, I will keep answering and hope the real opportunities come through.
