CLARKSON FRATERNITIES
CLARKSON'S THIRD FRATERNITY
October 23d, 1919, marked the initial night of what was then Clarkson's third and newest society, the Lambda Iota Fraternity. Established primarily to promote fraternal principals, since the majority of the students at that time were non-fraternity men and were not receiving such benefits, this organization consisted of thirty charter members who selected for their officers: Delos Crumb '20, President, Herbert Wood, vice-pres., Neil Campbell '20, auditor, and Frederic Quinn '22, secretary and treasurer. The faculty advisor was Professor H. M. Royal.
By February, 1920, the Lambda Iota Fraternity was fully organized and located in the Henderson House, 18 and 20 Leroy St. From there, it moved to the present location, 30 Elm street, when in 1922, negotiations were completed and this fine residence purchased. Although many townspeople at the time were skeptical of this move and predicted it would be too big an investment, sub-1 sequent events proved otherwise. Perhaps the first fraternity at Clarkson to inaugurate in 1938 a plan of operating under a budget with a system of advance payments, due three times a semester, the Lambda Iota Fraternity soon met its obligations favorably, with the result that the townspeople changed their predictions of woe to compliments and praise for the extremely competent financial management.
Some of the more prominent alumni connected with the White Mansion are Richard V. Leary, in charge of Eastern Division of Worthington Pump; Clement V. Conole, Assistant Industrial Commissioner of New York State; George Williams, connected with General Electric; Murray H. Bennett, executive with Stebbins Engineering Co.; and Leon Spear, with Central New York Power Corporation and head officer of the Lambda Iota Alumni Association.
As active in extra-curricular activities as in tlie classroom, Lambda Iota is the favored contender for the interfraternity sports cup for this year, and in addition to being a former winner of the scholarship cup, has a very good chance of taking this also this year. In fact, there is no extra-curricular activity in which Lambda Iota is not well represented, now as in the past. Lambda has always been represented on the athletic field, some of the more prominent of j these representatives being "Boots Gaffney" Clarkson's best all-round athlete, Tommy Kettles, one of the best hockey goalies ever to have entered Clarkson, "Cliff" Flower, Paul Marion, "Alf" Gratton, and innumer able others who have worn the Green and Gold with distinction.
The faculty members, Dr. Hamlin, head of the Math. Dept, Professor Piper of the Physics Dept., Professor Farrisee of the Civil Engineering Dept., Dr. Crandell, head of the B. A. Dept.. and Professor Buxton of the Math. Dept., and with such a list of faculty members along with the fact that membership this year numbers 54, Lambda Iota Fraternity ranks I high among the societies of Clarkson.
